This is Dolman's Garage, Winson Green.  The road on the left is Foundry Rd at  its junction of Winson Green Road.  On the right is Lodge Road at the junction of Handsworth New Road.  Is the breakdown truck a Bedford or an Austin?  Gulf Petroleum is another petrol company that is not seen these days.  I bet you could buy ESSO BLUE paraffin here.

Bob, The breakdown truck featured on the picture of Dolmans Garage is very definitely an Austin. I know I have spent hours in the thing. I used to work for Brian and Alan doing 24 hour breakdowns, all for the princely sum of 10 shillings per call, which would often be in the middle of the night, no matter how long you were out, the rate was 10 bob, less tax by the way. We christened the truck 'sweaty', cos it had no power steering, no power brakes in fact it didn't have much of a braking system at all come to think about it), and it was ex army. The opening for the machine gun was still in the roof of the cab. The engine protruded into the cab, and it became very hot..no air con of course, you opened the windows. In four wheel low ratio, it could pull an house down.It consumed petrol at an extraordinary rate.. wonder where it is now .

Alan is still there of course , how long though before Dolman is no more, Chris LEES
